The recruitment team at Opus Energy has been very busy over the past couple of months, visiting universities all over the country to promote our Graduate Analyst and Graduate IT programmes. We spoke to our Resourcer, Andy Seaton, about what exactly happened at these events, and why they’re so important to Opus Energy.Hi Andy, could you give us a rundown of an average day on a University tour?
The main focus of these events was to discuss the two Graduate schemes that are available and the career opportunities that Opus Energy can offer a Graduate. We also had one of this year’s graduates with us at each event who was able to talk about their experience so far with Opus Energy and throughout the application procedure.
A lot of the work was about brand awareness and engagement as this is only the second year we have been going to universities so we are trying to encourage the Opus Energy brand into the minds of graduates.
Why is graduate recruitment so important to Opus Energy?
Graduates bring high levels of energy and new ideas into a business that you can miss out on if you only hire candidates with work experience behind them. University courses provide students with vital transferable skills that we can utilise and then tailor to the methods of work that we use here at Opus Energy.
The aim for our graduates is to be the senior managers of the future and therefore the scheme enables them to get a thorough overview of the company and understand the processes involved in order to rise through the company to a leadership position. How has the response been so far?
Applications are open until November 30th but we have already received several hundred applications to our two Graduate schemes.
What other work do you do at Opus Energy to find quality candidates?
For the grad schemes we advertise on multiple graduate job boards (Milkround, Graduate-jobs, Reed) to push the opportunities. We also advertise directly on university careers portals.
What is the best thing about visiting universities?
It’s a great opportunity to meet driven candidates and inform them how Opus Energy can help them to meet their career aspirations. It’s always enjoyable to tell people Opus Energy’s story and growth-success, especially as people haven’t always heard of us. When you see our stand packed out is always good to see. And I get to eat lots of skittles!
Could you tell us a little about the new graduate schemes that have just opened up?
These programmes last for 2 years and involve rotations around various departments of Opus Energy, with a guaranteed job offer at the end. There is a tailored learning and development plan, overseen by an assigned mentor from the current team who will support you for the duration of the scheme.
The basic salary is £23,000-£25,000 with £1,000 relocation assistance. There is also a £1,000 pay rise at the end of years one and two, plus other benefits and a bonus package. To find out more about the Opus Energy Graduate programmes, please visit our Careers page by clicking here.
