Blog: Tokyo World Championships finals

Unfortunately after a disappointing qualification round in Tokyo the GB Men’s Team have failed to grab one of the eight automatic places for the London Olympics next year due to us finishing 10th.   As a team we are hugely disappointed not to automatically qualify, however we will now all focus on getting ourselves a spot when we take part in the Olympic test event at the O2 Arena in January.   Ahead of Tokyo our training and preparations were going really well and the whole team was feeling really confident. We started on rings and got off to solid start, with only a couple of minor errors before moving onto vault where we managed to post some really good scores that saw us sitting in 3rd place as a team.

We then moved onto Pbars and again posted some good scores with only a couple of errors that moved us up into 2nd. After five rounds of qualifications, everything seemed to be going to plan. We then moved onto highbar but uncharacteristically we only posted one clean routine out of the five which saw us slip back down the rankings.

We nervously moved onto floor but managed to regroup and put in some solid performances before the last apparatus, the Pommel. We really needed to post some good scores on the Pommel to secure a place in the team final but unfortunately two falls meant we were forced down the rankings to finish in 6th place. With another 3 rounds still to go and with some big teams still to compete we now had a nervous wait to see if we had done enough to clinch one of the automatic spots for the Olympics.

Unfortunately due to strong performances from China, France, Korea and Russia we now have to wait until January to clinch one of the last 4 spots still available.   I am confident we will regroup as a team and put in a performance in January that will highlight the team’s world class ability. I would also like to congratulate Dan Purvis for finishing 4th in the All Around after an exceptional performance and Louis Smith for picking up GB’s only medal on the Pommel Horse after another consistent display of expertise on the Pommel.   I will now have a couple of days off before starting our preparations for January.

Cheers, Dan
