Team GB clinch 3rd place ahead of China and another historic win for the GB camp!
In a very close contest Team GB claimed its biggest ever scalp when we took the bronze medal ahead of China, in the prestigious Japan Cup competition in Tokyo on Saturday 2 July.
Japan claimed gold with a score of 268.150, America silver with 267.250, and GB bronze with 263.50. China was 4th with 262.450 followed by Canada, France, Korea and Hong Kong.
The competition followed the same format as will be used for the London 2012 team competition, where a five man team is entered for the competition, but only 3 gymnasts are allowed to compete on each apparatus. All 3 scores for each apparatus count towards the final team score.
Team GB started on rings and after the fifth rotation we were sitting in 4th place with Japan, China and America ahead of us. But a cruel twist of fate and a couple of major errors from the Chinese on their last apparatus saw them slip from 2nd to 4th, and left the door open for Team GB to clinch a historic 3rd.
On Sunday 3 July it was time for the all around competition with Kristian Thomas and me representing GB.
Armed with new routines on floor, rings, parallel bars and high bar I went into the competition a little nervous and unfortunately failed to pull it off. I recorded a couple of major errors on pommel and parallel bars, and a number of minor errors on rings and high bar, and finished in 8th place.
As it was the first time I had ever tried to compete with my new routines I have to be pleased with what I did do, as there were a lot of very positive elements which looking forward are very encouraging. I just need a few more competitions under my belt to get these new routines tried and tested.
Apart from the Japan cup, you may have noticed that I have been appearing in a new TV advert for Maximuscle which started on Friday 1 July and has been previewed quite extensively ahead of major sporting events including the Haye vs. Klitschko fight on Saturday. Just in case you missed me I’m the one on the pommel and the rings!
That’s all for now,
