Well it was a shock to the system arriving back in England to this cold weather! After a rainy first day the sun finally come out in Cancun, and we enjoyed 12 days of near perfect weather. It was a good opportunity to top up the tan!
But it wasn’t all white sandy beaches and glorious sunshine…
The training was really hard especially in a gym with no air conditioning! However the equipment was top quality and in great condition. We trained from 9 til 5 every day apart from 1 rest day when we went snorkelling in Xel-Ha lagoon – now that was awesome!
In the gym I continued to work on my new skills and I can say that I have now got my Kovac (a release and catch somersault over the bar) quite consistent and it is now competition ready. I also have new skills on rings, Pbars and floor. They are getting there but not quite consistent enough for a competition just yet.
First success for Team GB
As a team we are really starting to gel and we have even had our first success! Team Canada, who finished 5th at the World Championships in 2005 were also training in Cancun, and British Gymnastics had organised a friendly team competition between us so we could see how much we had all progressed.
Guess what…we won!!!! It was a huge achievement and tremendous boost for the team but we still have a lot of work to do and need to keep our feet firmly on the ground.
I now have a week at home ahead of our second team camp at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall – I then fly to Massachusetts on the 3rd of March for the Tyson American Cup; something I am really looking forward to. So in my next blog I will let you know how the preparations are going.
