Blog: 2012, the Olympic year

2012 is finally here but, more importantly, there are now only 207 days left until the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. The GB squad’s main aim is to ensure that there is a full squad of gymnasts going to the games. The squad has just one more chance of qualification, on 10th January at the O2 Arena, where the squad has to finish within the top four teams.

The team spirit and fitness is really high at the moment, following some intense training at Lilleshall throughout December. I can now confirm that the team selected for the Olympic Qualification is:
•Me, Daniel Keatings
•Daniel Purvis
•Kristian Thomas
•Ruslan Panteleymonov
•Max Whitlock
•Louis Smith

Sam Hunter has also been selected as a travelling reserve, in the event of any late injuries.

The team’s focus will now be on our tactics as all of the teams competing are capable of grabbing one of the last four spots. The other teams include France, Spain, Canada, Belarus, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Italy. Our main competition will undoubtedly come from ourselves; we know we have the depth and quality within the team that should have seen us qualify at the first attempt and within the top eight teams in Tokyo.

If we get everything right and qualify within the top four teams our focus will switch to the European Team Championships in France, in May, before selecting the team to represent Great Britain at the greatest show on earth: the Olympic Games. I will definitely be fighting for a spot on that team as the best things I could wish to achieve in 2012 are to qualify for the Team, make an Olympic final and claim a medal at the London Olympics.

Wish me and all of Team GB good luck.

Cheers, Dan
